Senator Liongson (Legislative Relations Committee) reports on the progress of House Bills 1591 and 1594 and Senate Bill 1162 concerning the University of Hawai’i Promise Program:

I am pleased to report that on Wednesday, Feb 22, 2017, the House Finance Committee recommended both HB 1591 and HB 1594 (UH Promise bills for UHCC and UH system, respectively) to be PASSED, with amendments.
The following day, Thursday, Feb 23, the Senate Ways and Means Committee also recommended SB 1162 (the companion bill) to be PASSED.
In both Chambers, there were no “No” votes or “Yes, with reservation.”
I attended both hearings at the Capitol, also bringing with me up to nine Leeward CC and Early College students from my classes, and we testified there. Most of my students (85%-90%) also wrote and submitted testimonies in support of the bills. [I conducted workshops on submitting testimonies in class.] 🙂
