Introduction

Leeward CC now has the new Blackboard Collaborate Ultra version, a completely re-designed Blackboard Collaborate Web Conferencing platform that’s simple, mobile-friendly, and can be used to support a 21st-century teaching and learning environment. Use Blackboard Collaborate Ultra to facilitate interactive instruction and host meetings allowing you and your students to learn together and work collaboratively in a synchronous (live) online environment. Features include: two-way audio, multi-point video, interactive whiteboard, application and desktop sharing, breakout groups, session recording, and more.

Getting Started

Prior to attending the first workshop session, please do the following:

  1. Complete the pre-workshop activity.
  2. Have a USB headset with mic (preferred). You could also use earbuds with mic (like what you use with your cell phone).
  3. Make sure you have the Google Chrome browser installed on your computer. (Blackboard Collaborate works best with Google Chrome and it’s necessary if you want to use the application sharing feature.)
  4. Install the Desktop Sharing Google Chrome extension.

Challenge Activity

  1. Play and explore using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra as a Moderator in a small group. Accomplish the tasks listed below in helping to guide you through several situations for using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra.
    1. It’s the first few minutes of the session and you’d like to say hello to everyone, show your webcam, and ask everyone where they’re logging in from. What would you do? Do that with your audience.
    2. It’s the beginning of the semester and you’d like to give a brief tour of your Laulima course site with your students. Do this with your audience by sharing your browser’s screen.
    3. You’re looking to share a slide (PowerPoint or Google Slides), picture (PowerPoint, .gif, .jpg, .png, or .pdf), or PDF, and then poll the audience. Upload your content to the media space and take a poll with your audience.
  2. Debrief and reflect on your experiences.
  3. How are you thinking of using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra?
  4. Questions?
  5. Before Part 2 Day, prepare a short 5-10 minute interactive session using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra. (Details below.)

Workshop Part 2

Facilitate your own 5-10 minute interactive session with an audience using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra to do the following:

  1. Interact with the audience using the mic and chat tools (*web cam and raise hand tools).
  2. Load and share an image, PowerPoint, or PDF to the media space.
  3. Use (and/or have Participants use) a few whiteboard tools (e.g. pointer tool, text tool, pen tool, eraser tool) to interact/engage with your audience and/or with your content or whiteboard on the media space.
  4. Use the polling tool with the audience, show the results, and clear the polling or end the polling session.
  5. Use Application Sharing to share an application on your computer or your computer’s desktop.
