Instagram Challenge

Whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned Instagramer, you’ll have big fun sharing and connecting with your colleagues.

How it works:

  1. Register for the Instagram 21 Day Challenge that starts on June 1, 2017.
  2. Tell your co-workers to register too!
  3. You’ll receive a daily email with your challenge for the day once it begins.
  4. If you commit and complete the 21 Day Instagram Challenge, you’ll earn a cool badge of honor! Whoo-hoo!

Please include the #emc21day hashtag in ALL of your posts.

Thursday 6/1 – Purpose

  1. What is your purpose for participating in the IG Challenge? Are you a newbie looking to try something new and fun? Do you want to meet Leeward CC colleagues? Do you want to challenge yourself creatively? Take a picture of something that represents your purpose for participating in this Challenge and upload it to Instagram.   2. In the “Caption” field of your photo, type a short caption letting us know your name and what your purpose is for joining the Instagram 21 Day Challenge. Also, include if you’ll be committing to the 21 day challenge for a badge and the hashtag #emc21day. E.g. I’m Jen. I just got a new camera so I will challenge myself to improve my photography skills in this #emc21day Instagram Challenge. I want a badge!

What’s a hashtag? It’s a word or phrase preceded by a pound sign (#) and used to identify messages on a specific topic. Users can search by hashtags they’re interested in to view all posts with that hashtag. For instance, search for #emc21day (or simply tap on the #emc21day hashtag link in the post you just did) to see your and everyone else’s posts who are participating in our Instagram 21 Day Challenge. Also, people use hashtags as phrases to describe their photo. For example, #readyforsummer and #alohafriday. (Note: Your account must be public for others not already following you to see your photos in searches.)

Friday 6/2 – Selfie

What is a “selfie”? A selfie is a photo you take of yourself, typically one taken with a mobile device.

  1. Apply a filter or an effect to your photo for an artistic look. (How to apply a filter.) (How to apply effects.)
  2. Let us know a little bit about you in your caption. Also, include the name of the filter or effects you used on your photo and the hashtags #emc21day and any other relevant hashtags in your photo’s caption.
  3. After you post your photo, search for the #emc21day hashtag in Instagram. Just tap on the hashtag link in your post to search for #emc21day. (Alternatively, how to search.)
  4. In the search results, browse through several posts. “Like” (by double-tapping on a post) and/or leave a comment on someone’s #emc21day post (by tapping the bubble button beneath the post).

Saturday 6/3 – Comfort

  1. Apply a filter or an effect to your photo for an artistic look. (How to apply a filter.) (How to apply effects.)

Sunday 6/4 – Breaki

What’s “breakie”? Breakie is a short word for breakfast.

  1. Include the hashtags #emc21day, #breakie, and any other relevant hashtags in your photo’s caption.
  2. After you post your photo, search for the #emc21day hashtag on Instagram. Just tap on the hashtag link in your post to search for #emc21day. (Alternatively, how to search.)
  3. In the search results, browse through several posts. “Like” (by double-tapping on a post) and/or leave a comment on someone’s #emc21day post (by tapping the bubble button beneath the post).
  4. In your #emc21day search, follow at least two users posting #emc21day photos. (“Following” will put their posts in your feed, making it easy to see their posts and interact. To follow someone, click on their username of their post and then the “+ Follow” button on their profile page.)

Do you have an inappropriate or “spammer” user following you on IG? You can block him/her. If you simply don’t want someone to follow you but you don’t necessarily want to permanently block her, you can block then unblock him/her to break the follow connection.

Monday 6/5 – Following

  1. Now that you’re following at least a couple of people, post a photo with that person or of something that involves/represents that person.
  2. Include the hashtags #emc21day and any other relevant hashtags in your photo’s caption.
  3. Tag the person in your post. (How to tag someone.) Tagging includes that user in your post to acknowledge that person. He/She will be notified that you tagged him/her.
  4. After you post your photo, search for the #emc21day hashtag on Instagram. Just tap on the hashtag link in your post to search for #emc21day. (Alternatively, how to search.)
  5. In the search results, browse through several posts. “Like” (by double-tapping on a post) and/or leave a comment on someone’s #emc21day post (by tapping the bubble button beneath the post).

Tuesday 6/6 – Purchased

  1. Post a photo of something you purchased recently. Include the hashtags #emc21day and any other relevant hashtags in your photo’s caption.
  2. After you post your photo, search for the #emc21day hashtag on Instagram. Just tap on the hashtag link in your post to search for #emc21day. (Alternatively, how to search.)
  3. In the search results, browse through several posts. “Like” (by double-tapping on a post) and/or leave a comment on someone’s #emc21day post (by tapping the bubble button beneath the post).
  4. Using the “search” feature on Instagram (IG) – search for your favorite “users” and follow at least three users. It doesn’t have to be people in the Instagram Challenge. It could be IG users like professionals in your field, celebrities, or places/stores. If you’re interested, check out some interesting “tags,” too, using the search feature to explore other content on IG. “Like” and “Comment” as desired. Wednesday 6/7 – Reading

  1. Post a photo of a book/magazine/anything you are reading, recently read, or are planning to read. Include the hashtags #emc21day and any other relevant hashtags in your photo’s caption.
  2. After you post your photo, search for the #emc21day hashtag on Instagram. Just tap on the hashtag link in your post to search for #emc21day. (Alternatively, how to search.)
  3. In the search results, browse through several posts. “Like” (by double-tapping on a post) and/or leave a comment on someone’s #emc21day post (by tapping the bubble button beneath the post).
  4. Have you been checking your “Activity Feed”? (How to check Activity.) If someone left you a comment on one of your posts, tap to open the post, and reply by posting a comment and “mention” him/her using the @ symbol followed by his/her username. “Mentioning” will notify that person you left him/her a comment on your post. (How to mention a user.) E.g. Thanks @emcleeward!

Thursday 6/8 – Good Vibes

  1. Send someone on Instagram “good vibes.” Examples include positive words, a saying, quote, compliment, or something that would make that person happy. Include the hashtags #emc21day and any other relevant hashtags in your photo’s caption. “Mention” that fellow Instagram user (or multiple users) using the @ symbol followed by his/her username. “Mentioning” will notify that person in his/her Activity Feed that you left him/her a comment on your post.     According to Urban Dictionary, “good vibes” is “all of the people, places, ideas, and possibilities that evoked positive, safe, happy sensations.”
  2. Check your “Activity.” (How to check Activity.) If someone left you a comment or question on one of your posts, tap to open the post, and reply by posting a comment and “mention” him/her using the @ symbol followed by his/her username. “Mentioning” will notify that person in his/her Activity Feed that you left him/her a comment. Friday 6/9 – Quote

  1. Share a favorite quote. Include the hashtag #emc21day and any other relevant hashtags in your photo’s caption.
  2. After you post your photo, search for the #emc21day hashtag on Instagram. Just tap on the hashtag link in your post to search for #emc21day. (Alternatively, how to search.)
  3. In the search results, browse through several posts. “Like” (by double-tapping on a post) and/or leave a comment on someone’s #emc21day post (by tapping the bubble button beneath the post).
  4. Check your “Activity.” (How to check Activity.) If someone left you a comment on one of your posts, tap to open the post, and reply by posting a comment and “mention” him/her using the @ symbol followed by his/her username. “Mentioning” will notify that person you left him/her a comment. Saturday 6/10 – Refreshing

  1. Include the hashtag #emc21day and any other relevant hashtags in your photo’s caption.
  2. Now that you’re following a few users, you should see their posts in your feed. Browse and “like” (by double-tapping on a post) and/or leave a comment on someone’s post (by tapping the bubble button beneath the post).
  3. After you post your photo, search for the #emc21day hashtag on Instagram. Just tap on the hashtag link in your post to search for #emc21day. (Alternatively, how to search.)
  4. In the search results, browse through several posts. “Like” (by double-tapping on a post) and/or leave a comment on someone’s #emc21day post (by tapping the bubble button beneath the post).

Sunday 6/11 – Active

  1. Instead of a photo, take a short video and post it in Instagram. (How to take and share video.)
  2. Include at least one other appropriate hashtag in addition to #emc21day in your video’s caption.

Monday 6/12 – Yummy

  1. Include at least one other appropriate hashtag in addition to #emc21day in your photo’s caption.
  2. You choose what features you want to use and how you want to interact with others on Instagram today. Feel free to explore some of the other Instagram features like “Stories” which post photos/videos that disappear after 24 hours.

Tuesday 6/13 – ʻOhana

  1. Include at least one other appropriate hashtag in addition to #emc21day in your photo’s caption.
  2. You choose what features you want to use and how you want to interact with others on Instagram today. Feel free to explore some of the other Instagram features like “Stories” which post photos/videos that disappear after 24 hours.

Wednesday 6/14 – Beginning

  1. Include at least one other appropriate hashtag in addition to #emc21day in your photo’s caption.
  2. You choose what features you want to use and how you want to interact with others on Instagram today.

Thursday 6/15 – Scenic

Tuesday 6/20 – Indoors

Wednesday 6/21 – Your Choice!

  1. Take a happy photo or video and post it to IG using the “Instagram Direct” method to rachaeledtech. (How to use Instagram Direct.)
  2. Include at least one other appropriate hashtag in addition to #emc21day in your photo’s caption and/or if you’ve successfully completed the 21 Day Instagram Challenge and would like to claim your Instagram 21 Day Challenge Finisher badge. If so, include your first and last names and that you earned the badge. E.g. Jane Doe completed the #emc21day Instagram Challenge and earned a badge!

The “Finisher” badge recognizes those who used Instagram to share and connect with others and successfully completed the 21 Day Instagram Challenge. This badge can also be used as evidence to include in your dossier. (Note: Your hawaii.edu account will be used for your Credly badge account.)
