Nā Kilo ʻĀina – Huli ʻIa

On Nov 17, 2018, Pelika Andrade and Kanoe Morishige gave a workshop at Leeward CC on  Nā Kilo ʻĀina – Huli ʻIa, a protocol and framework they developed as part of a team from Na Maka o Papahānaumokuākea. We will integrate some of the concepts and hope to develop seasonal calendars describing the 3 areas of Leeward CC: Puʻuloa/Ewa, Waiʻanae, Waialua. This project will be a collaboration with community groups (Hui O Hoʻohonua, Mālama Learning Center, Loko Ea, Wānana Paoa), high schools and Leeward CC faculty and students. The goals are 1) to learn how to carefully observe our natural environment, 2) to remember our observations in order to see patterns, 3) to share those observations as a community/group to record seasonal patterns, 4) connect those environmental patterns to language by finding/creating ʻōlelo no ʻeau, and 5) to use these seasonal patterns towards sustainable management.

Email kiloaina@hawaii.edu if you are a Leeward CC faculty, staff or student and would like to participate!
