“Books are a uniquely portable magic.”
-Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

Stephen King is a prolific writer of many short stories and books such as The Shining, IT, Carrie, Misery, The Green Mile, and Shawshank Redemption. His stories have enthralled us with mystery, horror, imagination and magic! Many have been turned into films and television series, including the forthcoming The Stand.

Leeward Library’s OverDrive Collection [New Window] offers two new e-books, The Institute and The Stand, that you can read via your mobile device.

Gothic Horror Fiction Reads

Gothic Horror Fiction: Classic and Contemporary Novels

Located near the Reference Desk on the Library’s upper level is a display of print and e-book titles, including QR (quick response) codes to access these titles through their Hawaiʻi Voyager records.

From Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto published in 1764 to Richard Matheson’s 1954 classic I am Legend to Emily Carroll’s 2014 graphic novel Through the Woods, readers have appreciated a little scare, shock, and suspense for centuries.

Come visit our Oc-THRILL-ber displays that will be up through the month of October.

Big Library Read [New Window] is an international e-book reading program facilitated by OverDrive, connecting millions of readers around the world.

Homes: A Refugee Story [New Window] has been selected for the next Big Library Read. On April 1-15, Leeward CC Library users will have unlimited access to borrow this e-book through our OverDrive database [New Window]. The lending period is two weeks from the start of your borrow date.

About the Book

In 2010, the al Rabeeah family left their home in Iraq in hope of a safer life. They moved to Homs, in Syria – just before the Syrian civil war broke out. Abu Bakr, one of eight children, was ten years old when the violence began on the streets around him: car bombings, attacks on his mosque and school, firebombs late at night. Homes [New Window] tells of the strange juxtapositions of growing up in a war zone: horrific, unimaginable events punctuated by normalcy – soccer, cousins, video games, friends. Homes [New Window] is the remarkable true story of how a young boy emerged from a war zone – and found safety in Canada – with a passion for sharing his story and telling the world what is truly happening in Syria. As told to her by Abu Bakr al Rabeeah, writer Winnie Yeung has crafted a heartbreaking, hopeful, and urgently necessary book that provides a window into understanding Syria
